Sheetmetal Trades Workers cut out, form, shape and join sheetmetal and other materials to create products and components. Common responsibilities include:
- review illustrations, specifications and blueprints to determine job, material and equipment requirements
- choose metal stock like stainless steel, galvanised iron, mild steel, aluminium and copper, and check sizes, gauges and other dimensions of metal stock against specifications
- trace metal stock with reference points and lines and cut them along guidelines using hand and power shears, guillotines and drills
- form and shape cut metal stock into products using folding and bending equipment, rollers, presses and hammers
- assemble and fit components into final products through welding, riveting, soldering, brazing and otherwise joining
- polish, file, sand and clean final products
