Fitters assemble and fit fabricated metal parts into products, set up machining tools, production machines, and textile machines, and operate machining tools and machines to shape metal stock and castings. They study drawings and specifications to determine suitable material, method and sequence of operations, and machine settings.
 
Fitters work in many parts of Australia, but Western Australia has a large share of Fitters. They predominantly work in Manufacturing, Mining, and other services. *This is a very large occupation employing 98,500 workers.  The number of workers has fallen over the past 5 years and is expected to fall to 92,900. Around 7,000 job openings are likely over this time from workers leaving and new jobs being created.
 
 
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

 

  1. A Certificate III/IV is usually needed to work in this job and the majority of workers have this qualification. Training is most commonly through an apprenticeship which combines on-the-job training with the qualification. Registration and licensing is required.
  2. Knowledge in Mechanical, Mathematics,Building and Construction, Mathematics,Design,  English Language and Processing as the most important area
  3. The skills workers rate as most important are Active Listening, Monitoring, Critical Thinking, Reading Comprehension, Speaking and Social Perceptivenes.
  4. The physical and social abilities workers rate as the most important are: Arm-Hand Steadiness, Control Precision, Multilimb Coordination, Near Vision and Manual Dexterit
